Nellie L. McClung (1873-1951) stands as a towering figure in Canadian history—a feminist trailblazer, social activist, author, and political leader. After moving from Ontario to Manitoba as a child, she became an insightful observer of rural village life at the dawn of the 20th century while working as a teacher. As a suffragette, McClung spearheaded the movement for womens voting rights, helping Manitoba become the first province in Canada to grant women the vote in 1916, a right that was extended nationwide in 1918, ahead of both the United States (1920) and the United Kingdom (1928).
