018 - A Nightmare on Elm Street II: Freddy's Revenge

Spooktober continues with the infamously gay horror sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street II: Freddy's Revenge. The movie was directed by (likely homophobe) Jack Sholder and written by (definite homophobe) David Chaskin in 1985. Robert Englund reprised his role as the man of your dreams himself, Freddy Krueger, only this time he wasn't terrorizing kids in their dreams, but was trying to take over the mind and body of one, Jesse, played by Mark Patton. This film oozes homoeroticism and has some not-so-subtle gay undertones, but production did not set out to make it that way! How did a film meant to be homophobic turn out so homoerotic? How did Mark Patton embrace the "final girl" horror film trope? Where did all the scary dream sequences go? With this week's Disney villain, it's definitely the pirate's life for me, HONEY. 1953 introduced us to the swishy swashbuckler Captain Hook, famed arch enemy of Peter Pan. While he isn't as overtly flamboyant as some other villains later, he sets the stage for the sissy to take center stage of Disney villainy. He even has a cute gay sidekick, Mr. Smee! Never say neverland!
