024 - A prince among paupers

from Gods fool · host Maarten Maartens

In a tragic accident at the tender age of nine, Elias Lossell loses both his sight and hearing, leaving him isolated and unable to communicate. As he grows up, Elias remains mentally stunted, yet fate unexpectedly bestows upon him the fortune of being the richest man in the bustling Dutch town of Koopstad, heir to a prosperous tea merchant dynasty. Meanwhile, his two younger twin half-brothers, Hendrik and Hubert, are left to shoulder the burden of managing the family business, stirring up resentment—especially from the ambitious Hendrik, who is driven by greed and hindered by his extravagant wife. As Hendrik plots to seize control and eliminate Elias from the equation, chaos ensues. This novel is laced with sharp satire and witty commentary that reflects on the values of wealth, social standing, and the human condition at the close of the 19th century. Originally a bestseller in 1892, this hidden gem by Dutch author Maarten Maartens (1858-1915) is a unique exploration of societal norms. (Summary by Anna Simon)

Epics of Rome Dr Rhiannon Evans This subject explores Ancient Roman epic poetry, the literary genre which deals with grand mythical narratives involving heroes, gods, war, and love affairs. Epic was the most prestigious literary form in the ancient world. Roman poets adapted and developed Greek epic, particularly influenced by the Homeric Iliad and Odyssey. Roman epics similarly deal with divine and heroic material, but Roman poets also weave contemporary and topical themes into the mythical subject matter. The primary text for this subject is Ovid's Metamorphoses, which tells many comic tales of the gods in love and encounters between heroes and monsters through a series of transformations. Epics which influenced Ovid will also be studied, such as the Greek epics of Homer, the early Roman epics of Naevius and Ennius, and Virgil's Aeneid, which was the most significant influence on Ovid. We shall also consider Ovid as a major influence upon Western artists and writers, from Shakespeare to David Malouf. Mythillogical Charles Snart Mythillogical is the podcast where two enthusiasts of mythology, history and folklore try and make sense of the wide variety of fantastic tales told by cultures around the world. We discuss why the same idea can show up in the mythology of cultures on opposite sides of the world, what real events can inspire superstition and folklore, how stories can completely change over time, and where possible try to figure out what could have inspired people to dream up dragons, demons, gods and monsters. May contain wild speculation, terrible puns, and if we're lucky, actual facts.
