Wilkie Collins, bekannt auch für seine Bestseller-Klassiker wie „Die Frau in Weiß“ und „Der Mondstein“, führt uns unter anderem in den deutschen Kurort Wildbad im Schwarzwald, die Insel Madeira, den englischen Herrensitz Thorpe Ambrose in Yorkshire und das London des 19. Jahrhunderts. Erschienen ist die erste deutsche Ausgabe im Jahr 1866 in der Übersetzung von Marie Scott in insgesamt sechs Bänden.
