12 - Creative People & Mental Health

from So You Want To Be Creative · host Andrew Valdivia

There is a longstanding association between creativity and mental health, with many famous artists, writers, musicians, and other creative individuals throughout history experiencing mental health issues. While this association is not fully understood, there are several theories as to why it may exist. One theory is that people who are more sensitive or prone to emotional intensity may be more likely to both experience mental health issues and also express their emotions through creative pursuits. Creativity can be a means of processing intense emotions and finding meaning in difficult experiences. Another theory is that creativity involves a certain level of risk-taking and nonconformity, which may be associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing mental health issues. Creative individuals may also be more likely to confront and explore difficult or taboo topics, which can be emotionally challenging. While there is evidence to suggest that some types of mental health issues may be more prevalent among creative individuals, it is important to note that this does not mean that creativity causes mental health issues, or that mental health issues are necessary for creativity. Rather, it is a complex and multifaceted relationship that requires further research and understanding. Additionally, seeking mental health treatment and support is important for all individuals, including those who are creative.
