#149 Do you want advice or do you want actual help?

Growth Instigators Hotline970.306.6432Would you rather have a slew of people giving you advice, or would you rather have few people offing help?Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every week day!  This is message #149 and I am Aaron Havens.Psychology and the way people think and why they do what they do is fascinating.  I’ve experimented with a hypothesis that has been floating around in my head.  The jest of it is that “If you ask for help you’re going to get advice- if you ask for advice, your likely to receive help”.  At the core, most humans really do want to help.  Yet it depends on how your position your request that determines if you will actually get the type of help you are looking for.  People want to feel good about the help they give.  They want to lay down at night and smile knowing that they contributed.  Shoot, don’t we all.  We want to be proud of our actions.Experiment with this today and let me know your findings.“May I get your advice on something?”  This approach seems like you are coming to me because you respect me and that I can actually help.  VS“Can you help me with something”.  This approach seems like you’re going to ask me to commit to something I don’t have time for, or don’t want to do… like helping you moving that heavy couch from your 10 floor apartment!Do you want to build a team of people around you that add value?  Then value them.  Being a person that values other people, their experiences, their view of the world, their perspectives can and probably will turn out really good for you.  Multiple times in my life I’ve asked for advice from someone and it has been like turning on a water spigot.  The advice also turned into help.  Here is an example.  I’m having a hard time making a sale.  It just seems like I might have the wrong network of people, may I ask your advice on how to get into the right circles or how to make better connections?YEAH… that turned into someone giving verbal advice and then little by little helping me along the way until they were introducing me to people in their circles of influence.Again.  It’s just an hypothesis.  Try it out though.  Value the people around you enough to think you can learn a thing or two if you just listen and respect them and watch out… you might actually build a powerful team around you that is willing to help at a drop of a hat!Thanks for calling in today.  Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic.  At the sound of the beep, when was a time you received more help than you thought you would get?https://growthinstigators.com/
