16. the "I'll just do it myself" trap
from The Unraveling Achiever · host Angela McKay
16. the "I'll just do it myself" trap"I know how to do this, so I'll just do it." "I want to make sure it gets done right, so I'll do it myself." Sound familiar? This is hyper-independence - self-reliance to an unhealthy extent. In this episode, I tune into the energy of hyper-independence and share three messages: what independence actually means (doing your part, not everything), why you need to express expectations and allow collaboration, and why hyper-independence isn't a badge of honor - it's likely a defense mechanism. If you can't ask for help, struggle to delegate, and believe you have to do everything yourself, this episode is for you.---When I settled into meditation for receiving the topic for this episode, the topic showed itself as your independence. And the more I sat with that topic of your independence, it showed me that it was showing up as hyper-independence.What Is Hyper-Independence?Hyper-independence is self-reliance to an unhealthy extent. It's often present because you're wanting or needing to try to control your environment for many reasons. Maybe one is to avoid disappointment. But in any regard, this hyper-independence might have you not asking for help, not trusting, over-functioning, showing up in perfectionism, not delegating, and even isolating. And it can lead to burnout, stress, strain on your relationships professionally and personally, and emotional neglect of your own emotions. You're Not Alone in ThisHyper-independence can be seen often in the realm of high achievers. It's not uncommon that a high achiever has turned to hyper-independence to get things done, to get them done well, to get where they want to go.It's actually pretty common. So if this idea of hyper-independence applies to you, you are so not alone. This is quite common, and it's just a matter of being aware of it and addressing it as you can and as you're comfortable.I received three messages for you.
