18: SPEAKING AND WORKSHOPS 101

from The Guava Girl Podcast by Isabella Silverio · host Isabella Silverio

In This Episode You’ll Hear About: This is for the woman entrepreneur who really wants to spread her passion, share her love on a stage doing speaking engagements, build her brand, and own that fact that she can have it all. The topic of speaking at workshops and conferences is something that I get a lot of questions on. Even though I have been able to become this international keynote speaker over the past year, I have to be honest that I’ve been having a bit of imposter syndrome about this topic because who am I to say I can teach my audience about speaking at events. I’ve definitely just been living in a state of denial about what I know.  I’m realizing that I do have something to speak to my audience about what I know! Starting at the very beginning of the story almost a year ago, I was working with one of my first clients, Danielle, working on her membership site for a wellness program. Danielle and I just got each other, we are both very headstrong women and were very eager to put on an event together here in Gainesville, FL. We planned to have the “Goal Boss Workshop” in January of last year to talk about how to set and achieve goals the right way. We set out and found a coworking space called Mind Space Collective and agreed to 30%-40% of the earnings would be given to the collective as payment for the space. Danielle and I had a couple meetings with Mind Space Collective to plan our event: Pitch the event! Hash out the details! Present the workbooks & other! We then created Facebook advertisements, a Facebook and Eventbrite event, got wine and cheese and a projector to create a nice, relaxed atmosphere for our guests, and priced our tickets at $25 dollars and sold 15-20 tickets. We broke even & made no money from the event, but that was okay because we really just wanted to put on an event to connect with our community to teach our passion. “You don’t have to go into everything to make money.”   So, that’s what really started it all for me, and moving forward I was starting to get invited to events at the University of Florida at Women’s Clubs and Entrepreneurial Clubs where I presented my business in different competitions and pitch competitions. But it wasn’t until one day I was invited to speak at an event in Mexico. I thought it was so fake and had such imposter syndrome when they told me it was all expenses paid. And after looking into the event more it turned out to be the biggest entrepreneur and technology conference in Latin America. Since then I’ve continued as a keynote speaker, started a podcast and more. So here are some actionable steps on how to build your personal brand if you’re looking to enter this space also: 1. Tag your location. 2. Put on your own workshop. 3. Apply to speak at different conferences. Subscribe & Review Interested in previous episodes or episodes to come?  Click here and subscribe!
