Leo Leesment pärineb Eesti ajaloos olulise jälje jätnud suguvõsast. Eesti Vabariigi Tartu Ülikooli õigusteaduskonnas oli ta õppejõudude seas üks väheseid, kes oli juba teise põlvkonna haritlane.Tema isa oli Asutava Kogu liige, advokaat ja Pärnu esimene eestlasest linnapea Jaan Leesment, lell dr. Hans Leesment oli meditsiiniteenistuse kindralmajor ja arst. Emapoolne vanaisa oli rootslasest laevakapten ja Pärnu sadama loots, karjääri lõpus Pärnus sadamapuksiiri kapten Olof Olsson (1835–1921). Tema õemees oli advokaat ja Pärnu seitsmes eestlasest linnapea Arthur Peetre. Tema hõimlane on ka rahvaluuleteadlane, Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia akadeemik Oskar Loorits (1900-1961).
