2 | Reality is a Revelation

from Mount Vigil · host Mount Vigil

In this episode, Blaine and Anthony discuss a foundational ability, an ability on which the rest of the Mount Vigil work depends: seeing reality. It’s never been easy to see reality well. But it’s especially difficult in our time: the fallout of postmodernism and critical theory, the rise of nihilism, the divisive strategies of social media giants, and the advent of post-human and transhuman ideologies have eroded our ability to hold on to a coherent story. We’re taught to doubt our experience. We’re gaslit by the knowledge brokers of our time.Where to ConnectMount Vigil has come to an end but you can still connect with Anthony and Blaine at their respective blogs:Anthony - Sun TongueBlaine - The Paradise KingNotesIn the first part of this conversation, Blaine and Anthony argue that reality is fundamentally narrative, and that a person’s ability to see reality is linked to the clarity of the story they’re living. In the second part of this conversation, Blaine and Anthony explore some of the obstacles that stand in the way of a strong sense of reality: an incomplete Gospel, everyday trauma, and technological opposition. In the third part of this conversation, Blaine and Anthony argue that a true sense of reality is dependent on a vision of Jesus, and then explore tactics to recover a strong sense of reality: engaging the real world, living in the family of God, and leaning on three effective discernment strategies. Those are the testimony of the Bible, the consensus of the Church, and the revelation of the Holy Spirit.Additional NotesThe GPT-3 AlgorithmThe Social DilemmaThe Age of Surveillance CapitalismThe Google Brain TeamThe Center for Humane TechnologyMIT Tech Review regarding troll farmsDesigning For Behavior ChangeHooked: How to Build Habit-Forming ProductsThe Race to the Bottom of the Brain StemReality PrivilegeMarc Andreessen’s work on the metaverseThe Wim Hoff Breathing Method

The Ten Commandments Chad Boersema Many focus on MAKING disciples, we hope to help in the process of BEING a disciple of Jesus. Understanding the ten commandments can be a good place to reflect on, as they were one of Israel's first introductions to learning how to relate to God and live in His way. Jesus also references the commandments in his sermon on the mount saying, “...whoever does them [the commandments] will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19) Looking forward to exploring these with you! Unreformed: the Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children iHeartPodcasts In 1968, police arrested five Black girls dressed in oversized military fatigues in Montgomery. The girls were runaways, escaping from a state-run reform school called the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children in Mount Meigs, Alabama. The girls were determined to tell someone about the abuse they’d suffered there: physical and sexual violence, unlivable facilities, and grueling labor in the fields surrounding the school. It was, as several former students called it, a slave camp.Peabody-nominated UNREFORMED is the story of how this reform school derailed the lives of thousands of Black children in Alabama for decades and what happened after those five girls found someone willing to blow the whistle. Host Josie Duffy Rice investigates the history of the school at the tail end of the Civil Rights movement in Alabama and speaks to former students who are still haunted by their experience but had the will to survive.
