#21 - Annihilation - Cosmic Horror, Alex Garland, and Feminism in Science Fiction

from The Cinedicate: Film & TV Podcast

On this episode of Cinedicate, we take a step into The Shimmer. The talented hosts of Re:Shoot - An Amateurs Guide to Gooder Film join this week to talk about one of their more recent favorite films, Annihilation. From director Alex Garland, Annihilation is an adaptation of the first book in the Southern Reach Trilogy. While creating the screenplay, Garland decided to take the story into a separate direction, with the blessings of the book's author. Garland's main objective was not to do a straight adaptation, but to capture the overall story and tone. Lena (Natalie Portman of Black Swan and Star Wars) is a scientist who was chosen by the US Government to study an extraterrestrial event, Area X. She reluctantly accepts because her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac of Ex Machina and Drive) was a part of a military mission to investigate The Shimmer in Area X. All members of their team, including Lena's husband have gone missing. She is wondering what happened and what lies within The Shimmer.    Connect with Cinedicate On These Social Platforms!
