29: PRACTICAL MAGIC | The Babaylan Part 2 of 3 In this series, we learn about the deep and important history (and present) of the Babaylan: The pre-colonial figure of ancient Filipino tribes who served as the bridge to the spirit world, the herbalist, healer and sometimes even deputy Datu. Over a series of episodes, we dive into: who is qualified to be a babaylan? Why were they typically women, and sometimes even trans women? What role did she play in society? And where can we find her in our history? In this second installation, we dive deeper into the different functions of the babaylan and the complex and diverse roles she plays in the community.  From medium to cosmologist, from a Karen to a Whoopi, the babaylan was, and still is, a force to be reckoned with. — The Gods Must Be Crazy is a podcast on Philippine Mythology hosted by friends Anama Dimapilis and Ice Lacsamana, avid mythology nerds and semi-professional gossips. Balder Dead (version 2) by Matthew Arnold Loyal Books The poem begins with the beloved god Balder, thought to be invulnerable, dead at the hands of the inoffensive blind god Hoder, in a game. Loki, whose deceit brought about this catastrophe, is promptly punished with exile, and Odin, Balder's father, sponsors a heroic quest to rescue his son from the land of the dead. This desperate venture unexpectedly meets with partial success, a conditional agreement to release Balder if everyone in the land of the living mourns his death. And even though over every hope hangs the threat of the ultimate end of the reign of the Norse gods, the mother of the gods points out that "much must yet be tried which shall but fail." They were once simply the words of a slave; a man who lived 600 years before Christ. They were written down by a Greek, and then a Roman, and they spread, like the armies of Rome, across the known world. They were told around heathen campfires, and noble hearths; whispered in sacred monasteries and churches; lectured in Victorian school rooms and acted out by children at play. Each little fable is bound up with 2000 years of wisdom and truth. From these we know that a mouse is too weak to withstand the strength of a lion, yet too mighty to be bound by ropes. We learn that the violence of the North Wind is no match for the gentle beaming of the unrelenting Sun. We know in our hearts that the sheep must push through life, and try to overcome its many dangers, that the wolf will trick and deceive to survive, and that we cannot pretend to understand the logic of the gods if we do not hold ourselves to the same standard. Therefore, Aesop's Fables be Prodigal Apologetics Wesley and Savannah Dover Christian Theology and Apologetics channel. We discuss a wide variety of topics of interest to modern Christians, including apologetics and theology. We believe in a literal reading of scripture (unless the scripture itself indicates differently), the inerrancy of the Bible, and that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone. For some background information on our ministry, Prodigal was started by Wes in 2020. For him, Prodigal was his first attempt at being faithful to God's call for him to evangelize and reach the lost. We like the quote by Charles Spurgeon, "If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for". In 2021 Wes finished his master in Theological Studies. In 2022 we got married. In 2023 Wes finished up his doctorate in C
