Lishan has over twenty experience as a heart surgeon but his entrepreneurial and professional success was not an easy road, he fled political violence in Ethiopia as a teenager but despite this went onto study both physics and medicine at Harvard University. He serves as Board Chairman of The Boston ECG Project Charitable Foundation Inc., a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to save the lives of children and adolescents by preventing sudden cardiac death and identifying underlying cardiac abnormalities and conditions On this episode he discusses how he took his company public in 2016 including the process and reasons why a company may consider going public, the steps entrepreneurs can take to spot opportunities or create solutions for current problems, what he learnt about the heart during his years as a surgeon of which may not be common knowledge, the causes of oesophageal cancer together with EsoCheck a device he brought to market which aims to detect pre-cancer and oesophageal cancer, a deadly cancer with an 80% mortality rate at 5 years and his philanthropic projects.
