Send us Fan MailThis audio production is intended to bring new technologies that impact our lives, like digital assets, central bank digital currencies and artificial intelligence in an easy to understand way to a larger audience. In this episode, we discuss a study by MIT that investigates the cognitive and performance impacts of using Large Language Models (LLMs) and search engines versus no tools, on essay writing tasks over four months. Researchers used electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor participants' brain activity, alongside Natural Language Processing (NLP) and interviews to assess cognitive engagement, load, and essay characteristics. Key findings indicate that LLM use correlated with reduced neural connectivity and lower cognitive load, suggesting less deep processing and diminished memory recall compared to the Brain-only group. Conversely, the Brain-only group exhibited stronger, wider-ranging neural networks, reflecting higher cognitive effort and engagement in creative and semantic processing. The study highlights concerns about a potential decrease in learning skills and a shift in cognitive processes when relying on AI, recommending a balanced approach to tool integration in education. The title of the study is "Neural Connectivity and Cognitive Processes in AI-Assisted and Unassisted Creative Writing".For more on AI, check out Leon's books on the subject.
