From CNN, I'm a FOMA DK, with the five things you need to know for Monday, August 19th. President Joe Biden is speaking tonight on the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and it's a bittersweet moment for the president, who dropped his reelection bid nearly a month ago. He and other speakers will be making the case for Y-Vice President Kamala Harris, Shilid Le Country. Here's CNN's MJ Lee.
We are told that we shouldn't see this as sort of a farewell speech from the president aides have told me that that moment is going to come later, probably in the month of January really days before his first term ends. Meanwhile, protesters are demonstrating against the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, outside the DNC issue. Many say they're not swayed by the party's positive reaction to Harris' move to the top of the ticket. A spokesperson for the March on the DNC coalition criticized Biden and other top Democrats for not withholding support to Israel, courtesy of CNN affiliate WBM.
Make it all a mistake. Joe Biden, get turned off that tap of money and funding immediately. The fact that he didn't means he supports this genocide, that he's got the blood of 40,000 Palestinians on his hands. U.S.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Israel has agreed to the U.S. his proposal to bridge the remaining gaps on a ceasefire and hostage release deal. He made the announcement during his trip to Israel today, and he has to each other and cut tomorrow. Now the top U.S.
diplomat says the next step is for Hamas to accept, but negotiators have their work cut out for them this week. Now what the challenge is besides Hamas agreeing to the bridging proposal is to make sure that they're clear understandings on how the different parties are going to make good other commitments, how they're actually going to implement this agreement. And that's what's so necessary. It's unclear what's actually in the bridging proposal put forward by the U.S.
last week, after two days of high stakes talks in Doha. But it stems from a deal Biden presented in May that included a full and complete ceasefire and a plan to rebuild Gaza. Donald Trump's former White House Chief of Staff and retired Marine John Kelly pushed back against the former President's recent comments about the Medal of Honor given to service members. During an interview in Pennsylvania Saturday, Trump argued that getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom was, quote, much better than the Medal of Honor.
When I say better, I would rather in a certain way get it because people that get the Congressional Medal of Honor, which I've given to many, are often horribly wounded or dead. They're often dead. They get it, plus humorously. In response, Kelly told CNN the two awards aren't comparable.
He said, quote, the Medal of Honor is earned, not won, by incredibly brave actions on the battlefield under fire. Billionaire Carl Icahn and his company Icon Enterprises have settled charges for failing to disclose pledges of the company's securities as collateral for billions of dollars in personal loans. The Securities and Exchange Commission said today, Icahn and his company have agreed to pay a combined $2 million in civil penalties. The SEC's investigation came after a report last year from short seller Hindenburg Research that claimed Icahn was employing, quote, quantity-like economic structures and using money from new investors to pay out dividends to old investors.
That report sent shares in Icahn's investment firm, Spiraling, wiping $2.9 billion off his net worth. Icahn said in a statement that this settlement showed Hindenburg's allegations didn't have merit. After coming up, Icahn's actress shares diagnosis. Danielle Fischl, who played to Pangolorens on the hit show, Boi Meets World, announced today that she has breast cancer.
Fischl said she's been diagnosed with very early ductal carcinoma in C2, saying it's, quote, technically stage zero. Breastcancer.org states that DCIS isn't life threatening, but those diagnosed with it have a higher risk of developing invasive breast cancer later in life. Fischl revealed the news on her podcast, Poi Meets World, and credited acting quickly with her early diagnosis. She said, quote, the only reason I caught this cancer when it is still stage zero is because the day I got my text message that my yearly mammogram had come up, I made the appointment.
That is it for us. This episode drops at 6am Eastern.
