From CNN, I'm a FOMADK, for the 5 Things You Need To Know for Friday, January 10. Homes start to rubble, abandoned cars scorched, and buildings decimated. That's the new reality for people around Los Angeles, as major wildfires tear through neighborhoods. The Pentagon says more than 600 National Guardsmen are helping firefighting and search and rescue operations.

Fire crews are expecting more wind and dry conditions to continue complicating efforts into next week. Here's Cal Fire, but Salih and Chief David Akunya. Although the winds are dying down from the direction that they were prevalent before, they are now reversing direction and now the areas that were calm are now going to be the head of the fire. And so our crews are having to be diligent about working on the entire perimeter in order to make sure that when the winds reverse, they don't have another head of the fire going in different directions.

A winter storm that brought snow and ice to places like Texas and Oklahoma is headed to the Carolina's and the Midwest. Charlotte, North Carolina hasn't recorded measurable snow at least 0.1 inch in nearly two years, but likely will break that drought. It could even total one to three inches in much of the state, still recovering from Hurricane Helene.

Snow has also started to fall in Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana, and widespread amounts of one to three inches of snow are expected there through tonight. One to three inches of snow could also fall in the northeast tonight into Saturday morning. More than 3,000 flights in and out of the U.S. were canceled today, the worst day for flight cancellations since summertime, as the winter storm causes major travel disruptions in the south.

The Biden administration has extended temporary deportation protections for nearly 1 million immigrants before the Trump administration takes office. Today's announcement applies to people from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela, who are already in the U.S. It'll shield them from being deported for another 18 months after the expiration of the current protection and allow them to remain here with work permits. The relief, known as temporary protected status, applies to people who would face extreme hardship if forced to return to homelands, devastated by armed conflict or natural disasters.

Immigrant advocates and democratic lawmakers have been urging the Biden administration to do more to protect these people. President-elect Donald Trump tried to N.C.P.S. for El Salvador, among other countries, during his first term, but faced legal challenges. The Biden administration has imposed harsh sanctions on Russia's energy sector, meant to cut off funding for the Russia-Ukraine war.

The new sanctions target two of Russia's largest oil companies, nearly 200 oil-carrying vessels, and it's liquefied natural gas production and export. A senior administration official says they expect the actions to cost Russia upwards of billions of dollars per month. The sweeping moves are taken just over a week before President Joe Biden leaves office, and comments President-elect Donald Trump says he's ready to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. U.S.

senior administration officials said they want to leave key even the incoming Trump administration with the strongest possible hand for potential negotiations. A Defense Department spokesperson said nearly $4 billion of presidential drawdown authority funding for Ukraine will roll over to the next administration. Coming up, Giuliani's fall from grace continues. Hey, welcome back.

Rudy Giuliani has been held in consent for a second time this week. In 2023, he was ordered to pay two Georgia election workers nearly $150 million for defamation and agreed to stop slandering them. However, after the trial, the mother and daughter told the judge that Giuliani was still spreading lies about the 2020 presidential election. Today, the judge lamped the former New York mayor and Trump lawyer for continuing to betray himself as a victim, and not responding to previous court orders.

Officials in courts have previously concluded that there was no conspiracy to change votes against Trump and Georgia in 2020, a state he lost to President Joe Biden. Alright, that is it for us. Tune in tomorrow for a new episode of 5 good things.
