According to a survey published last year in the Journal of the American Medical Association, weed is now the “most commonly used illicit drug during pregnancy." While the danger of the drug to a fetus is still hotly debated, its potential to trigger the involvement of child welfare services is not. Emily Berger, a supervising attorney with the Los Angeles Dependency Lawyers, explains why, post-cannabis legalization, she's seeing an increase in child welfare cases related to cannabis use, and why these cases are clogging up the system unnecessarily.
