It is natural to give God thanks in good times, but scripture exhorts us to "count it all joy when we fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of our faith worketh patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that we may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing" (James 1:2-4). Praising God amid our trials, frustrations, and adverse conditions contradicts our carnal nature. And in His wisdom, God allows adversity to help us overcome our selfishness. Living the word (as Sister Chan testified) is not theoretical. The testing of our faith develops perseverance. When we allow perseverance to finish its work, we will be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
