Addiction, Pt. 1

from THE LATEST CRAZE: A Forensic Analysis of Pop Culture · host Karen Rosenbaum and Joshua Matthys

In our first episode discussing addiction, we start big. Like, really big. Dr. Karen and Josh will talk about the opioid epidemic that's victimized our country and so many communities and individuals across the US.  It all started with a diabolical effort by the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma to launch and push their "timed release" opioid drug OxyContin. As depicted in the Hulu series Dopesick, based on the non-fiction book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy, the devestating outcome of one company's efforts to push a dangerous product and take advantage of just about everyone, from doctors to pharmacists to individuals suffering from pain, is something we are all, as Americans, still contending with to this day.
