Advent Prayer Guide: Week 03 Day 02
from Redeemer San Angelo Sermons
“Eternal” - ‘ad “Father” - ab Because the book of Isaiah was written in Hebrew, we’ll be paying attention to the meaning of these words from their Hebrew uses. You are free to use this word study to whatever extent you desire. We suggest you read the translations and definitions, then meditate on the third messianic title of Isaiah 9:6 with these new meanings in mind. If you want and are able to, visit the cross references and make notes about the variety of uses, considering how these uses may contribute to a deeper understanding of Jesus’ character. Everlasting, evermore, perpetually In perpetuity of past time and future time; ancient and unending Cross References: Exodus 15:18; Job 20:4; Psalm 90; 145:21; Isaiah 45:17; 1 Chronicles 29:10-12 Father, chief God as father of his people; head or founder of a household or family Cross References: Genesis 17:4; Genesis 50:1; Exodus 4:22; 2 Corinthians 6:16-18. The Lord’s Prayer can absolutely be prayed through word-by-word, as it is given to us in Scripture. But, it also can act as a wonderful template for a longer time of prayer by slowing down through each line or thought. Feel free to take it at your own pace, listening to the Spirit’s prompting. For example: “Our Father”... Think about the idea of God as your loving Parent, one who has good and kind intentions toward you. “In heaven”... Remind yourself that God is all around and with you. Remember that heaven is not a far off place, but is the unseen parts of what is right here with us on earth. “Hallowed be your name”... Imagine the whole world worshiping God. Hope and pray for every space of your ordinary life to be filled with God’s goodness and glory. Continue praying The Lord’s Prayer in this way. If you need to, you can even break it up to pray and meditate through only a few parts per day. Take your time. Our Father... in heaven... hallowed be your name... your kingdom come... your will be done on earth as it is in heaven... give us this day our daily bread... and forgive us of our debts... as we forgive our debtors... lead us not into temptation... but deliver us from the evil one... for the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. This prayer practice is adapted from Practicing The Way’s “The Prayer Practice”.
