Lodewijk Napoleon werd gezien als een nietsnut, een loser. Hij was dan wel het neefje van Napoleon, de voormalige keizer van Frankrijk, maar van diens grootsheid had hij niets meegekregen. Twee keer probeerde hij de macht te grijpen en twee keer mislukte het jammerlijk. Maar als in 1848 voor het eerst in een generatie vrije verkiezingen gehouden worden, weet hij ze wonderbaarlijk genoeg te winnen. En deze prins-president was niet van plan om de macht daarna ooit nog los te laten.
