Oleg Gordievsky had nooit iets anders kunnen worden dan een KGB-agent. Zijn vader werkte voor de dienst en zijn oudere broer ging hem ook al voor, een wereld van avonturen en spionage wachtte op hem. Maar nadat hij naar het Westen wordt uitgezonden, verliest hij zijn geloof in de ‘superioriteit’ van de Communistische Sovjet-Unie, hij loopt over naar de kapitalisten en weet zo jarenlang geheime informatie te lekken. Tot hij in 1985 ontdekt wordt door een andere dubbelspion, en Gordievsky moet vluchten voor zijn leven.
