Begin 15e eeuw wordt Frankrijk geteisterd door politieke verdeeldheid. Koning Karel VI is zijn verstand verloren en daardoor niet in staat te regeren, waardoor machtige edelen de strijd om invloed zijn aangegaan. Jan zonder Vrees, de hertog van Bourgondië, en Lodewijk van Orléans, de broer van de koning, staan daarbij lijnrecht tegenover elkaar. Ondanks dat de twee zich met elkaar verzoenen, laat Jan zijn rivaal in 1407 vermoorden. Hij presenteert de daad als een noodzakelijke ingreep in het belang van het koninkrijk, maar de gevolgen zijn groot: een langdurige burgeroorlog die Frankrijk verder verzwakt.
