Age of Opportunity Episode 5

from The SLP Book Club

This week we're covering chapter seven from Age of Opportunity by Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D. This chapter is called "How Parents Can Make a Difference." It's a chapter about parenting, but it applies to us as SLPs and educators! In this episode, we go over the characteristics of caregivers that are most likely to lead to strong self-regulation skills in children. Parents (and educators) need to be warm, firm, and supportive in order for children to thrive. We discuss the three main styles of parenting: autocratic, permissive, and authoritative. Authoritative parents are warm and caring, consistent and fair with rules, and provide appropriate support as the child develops. Authoritative parenting leads to children who are motivated, secure, and successful. At the end of this episode, we discuss how this information about parenting can be applied to the work we do as SLPs. Get the book here. You can check out Adrianne's new app, Say Hello, by going to sayhellospeech.com/say-hello-app.View the app in the Apple App Store here and on Google Play here.Interested in learning more about the Tiny Talkers Group Curriculum?
