from Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales · host Joseph, Gabriel , and Mike Behill
Send us a textLet's get in to part 3 of Alcatraz, in this episode we go over the start of the federal prison, the notorious inmates, and the close of the prison. Alcatraz, often dubbed "The Rock," began its journey as a federal prison in 1934. Its location on a desolate island in San Francisco Bay made it an ideal site for housing some of the most notorious criminals in American history. The prison was designed to hold prisoners who caused trouble at other penitentiaries or were considered extremely dangerous.Notable inmates included the likes of Al Capone, the infamous Chicago mob boss, who served time for tax evasion. Another was George "Machine Gun" Kelly, a notorious gangster. The Birdman of Alcatraz, Robert Stroud, although famous for his bird studies, was actually incarcerated at Leavenworth and never kept birds while at Alcatraz.Alcatraz was characterized by its stringent security measures and the belief that it was inescapable. Despite this reputation, there were attempts to escape, one of the most famous being the 1962 attempt by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers. They crafted dummy heads to fool the guards and managed to escape through tunnels but were presumed to have drowned in the bay during their getaway. The prison faced deteriorating infrastructure and escalating maintenance costs, leading to its closure in 1963. The isolated island prison was deemed too expensive to maintain and had lost its efficacy as newer, more advanced facilities emerged. After its closure, Alcatraz gained notoriety as a tourist destination and a symbol of America's criminal justice system.Nightmares of the americas and the behill network are teaming up with the long hairs.
