Building a great brand or business is a rigorous and often frustrating process. But what about rebuilding a business that has been closed for ages? In order to rebuild a business to its former glory, you will have to re-establish your network, restore your business community relationships, and find ways to develop your product according to your current market.

In this podcast episode, the Matts welcome their guest Andy Rieger, founder of J. Rieger & Co. Andy is the third generation grandson of Jacob Rieger. J. Rieger & Co originally started in Kansas in 1887, only to meet an early demise in 1919 with the onset of the 18th Amendment and Federal Prohibition.

In 2012 Andy Rieger and Ryan Maybee, a career bartender and restaurateur, set out to revive this historic brand. Together, they formed a bond drawn from their shared vision of re-establishing, not only Andy’s family legacy but also reviving the distilling industry in Kansas City. In 2014, the duo relaunched J. Rieger & Co., Kansas City’s first distillery since prohibition, through the release of “Rieger’s Kansas City Whiskey”, a unique style of American Whiskey that pays tribute to J. Rieger & Co.’s history.

Learn from the challenges that Andy faced on rebuilding his family’s historical business and how he was able to grow the demand for their product in Kansas City in just 4 years.
