The message that God has given to Amos is for the Northern kingdom of Israel. They have no regard for the word of God. They are steeped in idolatry. Their treatment of the poor and vulnerable is both inhumane and unjust. Yet they are living in peace and prosperity. Based on their living conditions, they are convinced that God is pleased with them.

Amos has come to let them know that nothing could be further from the truth. God has been faithful to them, giving them every opportunity to live a godly life. Yet they have chosen the path that leads away from God.

The judgment of God is coming upon the Northern kingdom. It may be decades away, but it is coming. The wheels of God's justice grind slowly but exceedingly fine. Apart from repentance, there is no escaping the judgment of God.

As we go through the book of Amos, may we learn not to repeat their actions.
