Pushing Cardboard Grant Linneberg Talk about historical boardgames and boardgaming. Tabletop conflict simulation boardgames, from old school hex-and-counter to modern card driven games and beyond. If it's a historical game, a political game, or a wargame, we'll talk about it.We dive into specific games in detail each episode, with tips on how to play and how the game fits in with other similar games. As well, we usually have an interview with a designer or publisher. And finally, we have news from the history gaming world as well as tips for new players and general chatter about what's happening in the hobby we love. Anne Severn and the Fieldings by May Sinclair Loyal Books Written in an era of cheap, formulaic romantic fiction, the nuanced, seditious, quietly erotic novels of May Sinclair stand out like literature from another era entirely. There is romance in “Anne Severn & the Fieldings,” but it’s romance of the best and profoundest kind, set in the context of authentic human personalities and tragic historical events. The motherless Anne Severn is adopted into the Fielding family and grows up in intimate friendship with the three Fielding sons, all of whom love her. World War I explodes into their lives with hideous effect, sending all three sons back damaged in one way or another. Anne herself sees the horrors of war as an ambulance driver, meeting along the way (in a whimsical little self-referential sentence) a “queer little middle-aged lady out for a job at the front” whom we recognize as May Sinclair herself, who volunteered for just such an adventure in 1914. Following the writer’s naturalistic vocation, the novel undertakes an analysis of the process of falling in love of its protagonist, Toneta, an angelic young seamstress, with Lluís, a law student from the Ripollès area. The relationship is marked by the class differences between the protagonists. The environments in which the story unfolds show us the historic district, the Rambla and the Boqueria of B Crome Yellow by Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963) LibriVox Crome Yellow, published in 1921 was Aldous Huxley’s first novel. In it he satirizes the fads and fashions of the time. It is the witty story of a house party at ‘Crome’ where there is a gathering of bright young things. We hear some of the history of the house from Henry Wimbush, its owner and self appointed historian; Apocalypse is prophesied, virginity is lost, and inspirational aphorisms are gained in a trance. Our hero, Denis, tries to capture it all in poetry and is disappointed in love. The author, Aldous Huxley, was born in 1894 and began writing poetry and short stories in his early twenties; this was his first novel and established his literary reputation.
