El rock urbano surge principlmente en las zonas conurbadas y marginales de la Ciudad de México, este género se caracteriza por crear canciones con una base musical sencilla, recargada en aspectos urbanos y explícitamente vivenciales. Aunque al Tri, Barrio Pobre, Liran Roll, El Haragan entre otros son los grupos y solistas mas representativos del Rock Urbano, muchos consideran a Rockdrigo González como precursor de este género, sin embargo mucho antes que Rockdrigo existió una banda llamada los Tepetatles donde participaban Chava Flores, Alfonso Arau, Carlos Monsivais, José Luis Cuevas, Julian Bert y el entonces guitarrista de los Teen Tops. En el Rock Urbano, las letras son explicitas y hay metáforas acerca de la ciudad y los materiales que esta hecha. También tocan temas como el amor, el desamor, la discriminación de toda índole, migración, delincuencia, drogadicción, muerte, riñas colectivas, prostitución entre otras.
