Attempted Murder of Hannah Pettey– Ep.125

from Crisis & Consequences · host Crisis and Consequences / Charity Doyle

In this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we examine the shocking attempted murder case of Hannah Pettey — a young Alabama mother whose husband allegedly poisoned her slowly over months with lead-filled capsules while presenting himself as a loving caregiver.  What began as mysterious illness, rapid weight loss, and debilitating pain would eventually uncover a calculated pattern of coercive control, financial manipulation, and attempted murder hidden behind the image of a respected healthcare professional.  This is the story of survival, gaslighting, domestic abuse, and the terrifying reality that danger sometimes comes from the person closest to you.    ⚠️ Content Warning  This episode contains discussions of attempted murder, domestic violence, coercive control, gaslighting, poisoning, psychological abuse, medical trauma, and emotional manipulation. Listener discretion is strongly advised.    Episode Summary  Hannah Pettey appeared to have a picture-perfect life in Hartselle, Alabama. Married young to chiropractor Brian Thomas Mann, she was raising children and building a family life in a close-knit Southern community.  But behind closed doors, Hannah’s world was narrowing. According to testimony later presented in court, Brian isolated her from family, restricted her independence, and controlled many aspects of her life.  Then, during their contentious divorce in 2021, Hannah’s health began to collapse.  After Brian gave her “vitamin capsules” he claimed would boost her immune system, Hannah rapidly became gravely ill. She lost more than 40 pounds in just a few months, became too weak to walk unassisted, suffered severe pain, and eventually experienced life-threatening seizures.  Doctors at UAB Hospital discovered the horrifying cause: extreme lead poisoning.  Investigators later alleged Brian Mann had been secretly filling capsules with lead particles and feeding them to Hannah over a period of months — all while taking out multiple life insurance policies worth more than $1 million on her life.  The case became national news not only because of the poisoning itself, but because of the profound psychological manipulation surrounding it. Hannah later described years of isolation, confusion, and gaslighting that made it difficult to even recognize she was being harmed.  After a 2025 trial, Brian Mann was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.  Hannah survived — but with permanent physical injuries and emotional scars that will last a lifetime.    Key Highlights  The Slow Poisoning: Hannah Pettey unknowingly ingested lead-filled capsules over several months.   Extreme Medical Crisis: Doctors discovered critically dangerous lead levels throughout her body, including her bones and colon.   Coercive Control: Testimony revealed years of isolation, manipulation, and psychological abuse.   Life Insurance Motive: Prosecutors argued Brian Mann stood to gain over $1.3 million from Hannah’s death.   Gaslighting as Abuse: The case highlights how psychological manipulation can conceal life-threatening violence.   A Mother’s Intervention: Hannah’s survival may have hinged on her mother recognizing something was terribly wrong.   The Trial & Conviction: Brian Mann was convicted of attempted murder in 2025 and sentenced to life without parole.   Survival & Recovery: Hannah rebuilt her life after surviving one of the most disturbing domestic violence cases in recent memory.     Themes Explored  Domestic violence and coercive control   Gaslighting and psychological manipulation   Financial motives behind intimate partner violence   Isolation as an abuse tactic   Medical abuse and poisoning   Survivor resilience and recovery   The hidden forms of domestic abuse   Family intervention and advocacy     Resources Mentioned  If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, coercive control, or psychological abuse, help is available:  National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233   Text “START” to 88788   RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-HOPE     Discussion Questions  Could you recognize the signs of coercive control in someone close to you?   Why do psychological abuse and gaslighting often go unnoticed for so long?   What role does isolation play in abusive relationships?   How can friends and family safely intervene when they suspect abuse?   Do you think cases involving poisoning are especially terrifying because of the betrayal involved?   What can communities do to better support survivors of non-physical domestic abuse?     Sources & Further Reading  48 Hours: “The Gaslighting of Hannah Pettey”   CBS News: “An Alabama mom was near death from lead poisoning.
