I’ve been in that dark place, wondering if things would ever get better. For years, I was in a toxic, emotionally and financially abusive marriage. I lost my confidence, my spark, and my sense of self. Then came wave after wave of loss and heartbreak. My sister and my dad were diagnosed with cancer at the same time. My dad recovered—twice—but my sister passed away when we were in our early 40s. Soon after, my mother developed dementia. She eventually moved into a care home and died during the pandemic lockdown, so I couldn’t even visit her in person during her final year of life.
