Awaken Hope PM Edition with Pat Black-Gould on All the broken Angels, Crystal Beads

from Awaken Hope · host Kandiee Campbell

Pat Black-Gould, PhD Pat Black-Gould is an award-winning author, speaker, and clinical psychologist whose work shines a light on resilience, inclusion, and the stories history nearly forgets. Her acclaimed historical fiction novel, All the Broken Angels, co-authored with Steve Hardiman, is more than a family saga set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the shifting landscape of 1960s America. Through Cate, a rebellious young woman navigating societal expectations, the novel captures the awakening of women’s voices and the courage it takes to speak out during times of cultural upheaval. Pat’s children’s book, The Crystal Beads, Lalka’s Journey, brings young readers into the quiet bravery of a hidden child of the Holocaust. Both books have received national recognition for their emotional depth and educational impact. Professionally, Pat has worked with Vietnam Veterans, served as LGBTQ+ veteran program coordinator, and provided psychological care within forensic hospitals and men’s correctional facilities. Earlier in her career, under her maiden name Patricia Black, she co-authored important academic work on mental health and Cultural Deafness with Dr. Neil Glickman, an experience that continues to inform her advocacy for underrepresented voices. A lifelong storyteller, Pat once ran a New York-based theater company, directing inner-city youth and summer stock productions. She’s also the author of award-winning murder mystery scripts like Murder in Hell’s Kitchen, blending suspense with her signature wit and dramatic flair. Her fiction and presentations center on inclusion, intergenerational strength, and the transformative power of voice. Short stories like “American Goulash” and “Two Seconds,” also co-written with Hardiman, delve into how memory, conflict, and connection shape our lives. Looking for a speaker? Pat offers engaging, thought-provoking talks on diversity, compassion, and storytelling—perfect for book clubs, libraries, schools, and community gatherings. Understanding the ten commandments can be a good place to reflect on, as they were one of Israel's first introductions to learning how to relate to God and live in His way. Jesus also references the commandments in his sermon on the mount saying, “...whoever does them [the commandments] will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19) Looking forward to exploring these with you!
