Sometimes folk are fighting battles that they themselves do not understand. The best thing we can do is to practice kindness and compassion as our default response to any situation. Many of us are reluctant to forgive because we think that opens us up to being taken advantage of or abused. That’s not what it means to forgive. We are not expected to stay in relationship with folks who are toxic, broken, or just generally have bad intentions. It’s appropriate for us to maintain healthy boundaries. Practicing forgiveness means that we release our anger and bitterness towards these individuals. It means that we walk away from seeking retaliation and retribution against them. We see them as the broken people that they are and treat them with as much kindness as we can while maintaining our boundaries. I’m Horace McMillon.
