Being Highly Sensitive is a Superpower

from The Eating Disorder Therapist · host HARRIET FREW

People with eating disorders often have the trait of being highly sensitive. What this means is that you feel things deeply, it’s like you have a thin skin to the world and at times, this can feel overwhelming. Growing up, it may have left you feeling different or as though you don’t fit in. You may have felt that others just don’t get you; you're ‘too much’, ‘overly emotional’ or 'too sensitive'. If you relate, you may view your sensitivity as a disadvantage and a cumbersome thing that you have to bear; something that makes life excruciatingly intense. However, there is a different perspective. Anthon St. Maarten says, 'Highly sensitive people are too often perceived as weaklings or damaged goods. To feel intensely is not a symptom of weakness, it is the trademark of the truly alive and compassionate'. In this episode, I talk about some of the advantages of being highly sensitive and embracing this side of yourself. I hope that you enjoy!
