Exosomes, what are they and why do they exist? Well, if you haven’t heard what exosomes are, then you are not alone. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles first discovered 30 years ago. It was since implicated in cell-cell communication and the transmission of disease states. It was also explored as a means of drug discovery.

So how are these extracellular vesicles important? Exosome therapies are now being explored in anti-cancer clinical trials, and recent reports claim taxol-filled exosomes can be used to treat cancers in mice at 50-fold lower doses than conventional treatments. And that is with the additional benefit that exosomes do not invoke an immune response.

To explain more about exosomes, Jim West visits the Startup Hustle studio. West is a life science entrepreneur, founder, and engineer. He is the founder of Clara Biotech, Anatomy3D, and Somametric.

At Clara Biotech, their mission is to enable therapeutic and diagnostic discovery and support clinical applications by providing the tools researchers need to harness the full potential of exosomes. The company was founded by scientists in 2015 who have spent much of their professional careers contending with the trials and tribulations of exosome research.

Clara Biotech is a platform technology that allows for the isolation of specific cellular markers (exosomes) from very small fluid samples, enabling liquid biopsy for the very early detection of cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, and many others. These same markers can also be turned into a precision medicine drug delivery platform delivering targeted drugs directly to the cells being targeted.
