Black Lodge Podcast 005: Justin Aulis Long

from Black Lodge · host Black Lodge

Our next podcast offering to the ever-hungry Lodge spirits comes from legendary Chicago sonic warlock, Justin Aulis Long. Justin has been a staple in the Midwest electronic music scene since the early 90's, borne from the fires of the infamous Medusa's on Sheffield. His technique and musical language have positioned him as one of Chicago's legendary selectors. Together with Eris Drew, Sevron and Sold, he is a founding member of the Hugo Ball gatherings that take place at Smartbar Chicago, where he is also the senior resident. Together with Ken Zawacki, Long is also one half of Circling Vultures, a techno-punk outfit with releases on respected labels such as L.I.E.S., Contort Yourself, Secret Studio, and later this year on our own Black Lodge label. A true chaos magician, Homeric poet, alchemist and visual artist. We are honored to share this podcast inspired by our recent Samhain gathering, of which he was an integral part of. Artist's Statement: "This recording is an alchemical reaction to the events that occurred within the paranormal spaces of the Black Lodge in Los Angles during the celebration of Halloween, a holiday with roots in the ancient pagan festival, Samhain. While engaged in the performative action of musical selection, time lost its significance as the material world dissolved. Turntables, mixer, and a thoughtful grouping of records (magic spells/alchemical compounds) are machines for divination. The sonic alchemy that thrives in the realm of chaos magick holds the key to travel beyond the familiar, and in that space is where we can locate the warm embrace of angels."
