Brian McAvoy's career was about breaking down barriers in international General Practice. It was a ground breaking career that brought new ideas and concepts into teaching family medicine across continents but always guided by the principles of personal and continuing patient relationship. Brian McAvoy has been a practising clinician for nearly 50 years,working as a general practitioner, addiction medicine specialist and academic. He has worked with marginalised patients in urban, inner city, rural and remote practices in New Zealand, Australia, the UK andCanada. He was Foundation Professor of General Practice in Auckland Medical School, Head of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and Deputy Director of Australia’s National Cancer Control Initiative. Now retired, he is a Compassionate Companion with Mercy Hospice in Auckland.
