Can We Stop Swimmers Dropping Out Of The Sport?

from Propulsion Swimming Podcast

Addressing the Dropout in SwimmingOn this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast we discuss and address the reasons that many teenagers leave the sport when in reality their swimming journey has just begun! There are so many reasons that kids drop out of swimming. It could be a change in interests, clashes with a coach, burnout, job opportunities, and many more. For me, I struggled to understand with a lack of improvement in the pool and why my times all of a sudden stopped falling. It was never explained to me that when I hit 16/17 that my body may have stopped changing and PB's were going to be a lot harder to come by. This combined with a clash in training style with my coach meant I turned my focus quickly towards study and academia. I clearly love the sport of swimming, that never went, I now co-run a successful swimming YouTube, so are there any adjustments that could have happened during my journey through the sport that meant I didn't leave the pool so soon?On this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast we take a deep dive into how we can stop kids from dropping out of the sport, which is especially important given this prolonged period out of the water. Does swimming in the UK have a fundamental issue with times being the gold standard and not enjoyment? And if there is an adjustment towards enjoying racing, winning, and points competitions - like many competitions are across the pond - would we see more swimmers stay racing for a longer time?If you only listen to one of our podcasts this year, please make it this one.
