It has been confirmed that a long-waited permanent cardiac service will finally be established at Sligo University Hospital. For a number of years, there have calls for a full-time service a permanent cath lab at the facility, which could mean over 2,000 patients could be treated locally rather than having to travel to the likes of Galway. However, during his visit to Sligo last week, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly confirmed that a Cardiac scanner would be part of the new 42-bed unit. Local Councillor Dónal Gilroy, who has long called for cardiac services says it's a much welcome development for the facility:
