Episode Description

CB Robertson is an author, husband, father, and autodidactic philosopher. If you don't immediately recognize his name, you might recognize his Instagram handle: Caffeine and Philosophy.

If I'm one type of man, who allows life to interrupt his philosophical pursuits, CB is the other type of man for whom philosophy IS life, or at least a big part of it.

I always admired his clarity of thought even if I was a bit intimidated.

But if I know my audience, you guys like lengthy, in-depth episodes to chew on, and I knew that CB would fit the bill.

In our conversation we discussed:

  • Why Homer matters, and how the stories of Achilles, Odysseus, and Hector have meaning for us today
  • Plato's Republic, and why it's easy to miss the subtle message that Plato is trying to communicate
  • The transcendent hero vs. the family man, and maybe why the distinction isn't so clear
  • Masculine speech, and its direct and indirect forms
  • And finally, how shared suffering between men binds us together in our minds, and hearts, as well.

CB graciously agreed to come on the podcast just a few short days after we started talking, which was inside my usual research window. But in this case, we decided to wing it. And I have a feeling you're going to like the results.
