Born the son of a Windsor shoemaker in 1703, Travers began his musical training as a chorister at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, before eventually being appointed Organist to the Chapel Royal. "Ascribe unto the Lord" is a setting of verses from Psalm 96 with virtuosic, florid solos for tenor and bass.
