Broadcast journalism is an incredible field to get into with the technology available today. With live streaming becoming more accessible, broadcasters have an enormous array of tools at their disposal to make their dreams a reality. In this interview, Chris Ripka, Host of Raw & Real Live, shares his origin story and breaks down how to get into broadcast journalism. Christ served in the military for 17 years and during that time he became the state Public Affairs representative and state video producer for the state of South Dakota and that propeled him to broadcast journaling. He entered the military right out of high school at the age of 17. In his time, he developed skills in problem solving and shutting out negative voices. There is always a solution and you can rely on the team around you to work together to find just the right solution to any problem. He learned communication skills and team building skills that he needed in the military. These are skills he relies on every day as an entrepreneur. After he left the military, he was diagnosed with PTSD and knew he wanted to be as far from it as possible. He found a job in underwater photography and that lead to video editing and eventually being in front of the camera. He loved this part of the job and decided that he wanted to learn more and be more involved in broadcasting. He decided to start a podcast, and he failed. So he took a whole year to learn as much as he could about the history of radio and how it developed into podcasting as we know it today. His work paid off and his current podcast, Raw & Real Live started small but has grown into something he loves and is passionate about.
