Christine Lakin Shares Her Birth Story & Details On ‘Hollywood Darlings’

One of the best parts of my podcasting experience so far has been bonding with other moms over their birth story. It's like veterans coming back from the war and swapping battle stories. Each one is unique, hard-fought and nostalgic for mothers.

Summary

Christine has been a star almost her entire life and I immediately felt like I was talking to an old friend. Her birth story is raw, and honestly it made me cry which I wasn't expecting. A wonderful side effect of being a mom now is that I cry at the drop of a hat. I think every parent will be able to relate to her story and find a bit of themselves in there as well. She's grown up in the business and continues to work to this day. Most people would recognize her from her breakout role as "Al" in the 90's sitcom Step by Step. She's been on a slew of TV shows like 7th Heaven, Veronica Mars and even created her own docu-series Lovin Lakin. And now she's jumped into an exciting new project with fellow 90's stars Jodi Sweeten and Beverley Mitchell called Hollywood Darlings.

Motherhood In Hollywood Podcast Anniversary and Highlights!

    Release Date: 06/27/2016

Description: I can't believe it's been a year since I recorded my first podcast and launched Motherhood in Hollywood into the history books. Technically my first episode was released on July 17th, but I released 3 episodes at once because someone on the internet told me that was the way it's done.  I still don't know if they're right. But I do know that I've completed 52 episodes and this has been the most challenging and empowering year of my life. I've said many times that the reason I launched MIH was because I needed a creative outlet as a full-time mom and working actress. And doing a podcast seemed like a wonderful way to combine the things I loved.  My first episode with actress and mom Jennifer Hasty was interrupted halfway through by Channing, who had to go potty. And it was made abundantly clear in that moment that my life would be a constant challenge to stay my pre-mommy creative self while raising my silly, strong-willed girl.  One year later, Channing and my husband Chris as much a part of this show as I am, and we're all still very, very silly. That's why I asked Chris to come on the show this week and share what it's like being Mr. MIH. He has read every blog post, every social media post, and listened to every single episode of MIH before it's released to make sure I didn't have any major technical glitches.  In fact early on, there were a few episodes where I did have some audio issues because I was still trying to figure out the right combination of mics, and software.  Bless those guests who had to be my guinea pigs LOL I'm still fine tuning everything from my website to my podcast. And I have learned so much about creating a website and producing a weekly online radio show.  It's like I'm growing as a person ya'll! Chris said for him, the episodes with Fresh Off The Boat writer Rachna Fruchbom, Fuller House writer Rich Keith and Powers star Justice Leak were the most memorable.  He was also surprised by how much he learned about actress Jillian Armenante and her passion for theater. I have loved each and every episode I've done. I've learned something new about myself, and about my guests, from Weelicious founder Catherine McCord, to casting director Dana Gergely Bowling and Hollywood Housewife Laura Tremaine.  Truly it's been such an honor to interview so many wonderfully creative people over the last year.  I'm so grateful for the generosity each guest showed by answering all my ridiculous questions and stepping boldly into the MIH world. There are so many more things coming down the pipe for MIH! I hope you'll stay on board with me for the journey and bring a friend. The more the merrier.  I look forward to doing the 2nd anniversary post and tell you all about the new TV show I'm starring in, or the feature film I produced.  Or maybe I'll just tell you that I'm exhausted, but crazy happy.

Katie Locke O’Brien on Being an NBC Female Forward Director

    Release Date: 05/08/2019

Description: Still feeling very inspired after this conversation with Katie Locke O'Brien. She, like many, moved out to Hollywood to be an actress. But in recent years she's found creative outlets in other areas of entertainment. She applied for the inaugural NBC Diversity and Inclusion Female Forward program, was accepted and recently directed an episode of AP Bio on NBC called "Melvin." All within in the last 2 years! Katie Locke O'Brien directing Christopher Lloyd on the set of AP Bio But it all started with an idea to share her story of motherhood when she became a first time mom. Her short film "Have It All" takes a look at motherhood through a very honest lens. I loved that Katie didn't sugar coat motherhood, but she also doesn't show the mom tropes that Hollywood loves to revisit again and again. We are not all a hot mess who can't seem to get a bath and get our kids out the door or change a diaper without smearing poop on our face. That's a side of motherhood I don't relate to and neither does Katie. So she set out to make her own version of motherhood and show it to the world (sound familiar?) and I loved it. Katie has a wonderful story of motherhood in Hollywood that involves her TV writer husband, her new found love of directing, and the strange yet wonderful direction her career is going in. She is now a member of the Directors Guild and exploring new projects to direct while still being a kickass, drama free, mama. Follower her on Instagram to see where her story goes next and don't forget to leave a review on this episode!

Expressing Motherhood Co-Founder Lindsay Kavet On Finding Mom Friends

    Release Date: 05/16/2016

Description: Putting into words what it's like becoming a mother is tricky. For some, the words flow easily and they are filled with beautiful stories and smart analogies. For others, there's lots of swears and a through-line of, "am I doing this right?"  I feel like I fall somewhere in the middle. Ah fuck it. I'm definitely the latter. That's why when I met Lindsay Kavet and found out about Expressing Motherhood I couldn't wait to hear more about it. Expressing Motherhood is an ongoing live stage show where moms, and sometimes dads, share their stories about motherhood. Lindsay co-created the show with her friend Jessica Cribbs and have been performing it with a rotating cast all over the US since 2008. I first found out about Expressing Motherhood from my friend Jill Simonian from TheFabMom.com (hey gurrrl!). She saw that I am clearly a gifted writer and have a deep-seeded need (read: desperate) to perform and thought this would be a perfect place to feed my soul. I think she might be onto something.... Expressing Motherhood Co-Founder Lindsay Kavet I was lucky enough to have Lindsay come on the show and tell me more about the #ExMoShow and what it's all about. We also talked about how moms are represented in Hollywood today, and both agreed Hollywood could be doing a better job of casting more realistic versions of moms. Or at least tell better stories about them. I mean, not all of us are frazzled and running around like a chicken with our head cut off trying to do it "all". Mother's Day, I'm looking at you. We also talked about her first play date rejection, how important mom friendships can be, and what it's really like raising a kid in Hollywood. The actual city, not the "scene." And Lindsay shares how you can get involved with Expressing Motherhood. It could be just the big break you're looking for to share that story about your toddler pooping in the dog's water dish!
