Coach Chat on the Responsibility of Being First with Leang Chung

from Start Within w/Coach Colette · host Coach Colette Ellis

Do you ever hear about a woman or person of color who is the "first" to accomplish a major milestone in an industry, and think: "Really, in 2021?" Well, our Coach Chat guest is no stranger to being first. Leang Chung was the first in her family to receive a Bachelor's degree, the first to have a job with an annual salary versus an hourly wage, and the first to become a corporate executive. It was these experiences of being "first" that inspired her to found her startup Pelora Stack, to help other underrepresented early-stage founders, mid-career women, and non-binary people prepare for their "firsts".  This Coach Chat conversation is the perfect culmination of Mental Health Awareness and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage months. You'll hear Coach Colette and Leang discuss how she was born into a refugee family from Cambodia and how her family values helped shape her perspective. Leang speaks candidly about the bias she faced early in her professional career, as well as her journey to discover her personal brand, learn how to communicate it, and how to create personal boundaries. She shares the difficulty of responding to microaggressions in the moment as an introvert. The two also discuss the detrimental mental health impacts on AAPI people that result from internalizing negative messages and battling stereotypes like the so-called "model minority" myth. Whether you're experiencing a first in your career or business, or if you're dealing with and processing racial trauma, you'll gain insights from this conversation. The stigma of mental health within those who serve in the shadow of the cross is something that invokes the stigma of fear. Many of those in the clergy will choose to suffer in their despair rather than reaching out for help. Sometimes those suffering choose to wait until it's too late to get the real help that they need. At Wounded Warriors of the Cross our mission is to lift the stigma and the veil of silence that encompasses clergy mental health and assist those who suffer in silence. Wounded Warriors of the Cross is here to shed the light of Christ's love into those dark places.
