College of Architecture Spring 2026 Newsletter
from University Communication & Marketing
In this edition of the newsletter: Architecture research into cross-laminated timber breaks new ground; Interior Design students create new homes to fit into historic neighborhoods; David City receives big grants thanks to a CRP project; and the Otoe-Missouria tribe plans a new ceremonial site with help from a Landscape Architecture studio. VISUAL DESCRIPTION: It starts with an aerial video of Architecture Hall. On a rooftop terrace, a man stands in front of a video camera crew. He is the dean of the college. DAVID CITY SUCCESS STORY We are in a small, rural town. A man leads two professors on a tour of the downtown area. Then we see footage from 2021 in which students explore the city, talk with residents, take photos and make notes. A man with the Southeast Nebraska Development Disctrict speaks to the camera. We see more of downtown David City. Inside a local museum, we see a large metal sign, sculptures, paintings, and antique car and other agricultural-themes items. The story ends with an aerial view of the town. EVERETT NEIGHBORHOOD SITE VISIT We begin in a snow-covered residential neighborhood near downtown Lincoln. The houses are older and showing their age. Several female students unroll and examine blueprints and designs for homes. We wipe to a classroom in Architecture Hall. The same female students are critiquing each other's designs. OTOE-MISSOURIA CEREMONIAL SITE About a dozen college students walk through a wooded area. It's fall and there are no leaves on the trees. They take photos and pick up deer antlers. A male student struggles to climb up the side of a ravine. In downtown Lincoln, a woman walks into an art museum. She goes upstairs to the museum's library. Back near the woods, a tribal woman hikes across an open field. She looks around at the bare trees. Students explore a creek that runs through the woods. They take more photos. The professor points to places on a map of the woods. The final shot from above the area shows the meandering path of the creek through the trees. CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER RESEARCH It begins with an aerial video of several cabins in a wooded valley. A man walks up to a rough hewn cabin and enters. The interior is made entirely of wood. A time lapse sequence shows the cabin being assembled from a few large pieces of pre-cut timber. Next we see a large timber yard in northeast Nebraska. An older couple look on as lumber is cut and drilled by a computer-controlled machine. As they talk, we see Professor Griffith hammering metal trim into the window slits of a prairie dog blind. Then we dissolve to a student critique in an architecture class room at the University of Nebraska. A pair of male students display their models to the class and to a female professor. We cut back to the cabin as Professor Griffith opens the windows. The video ends with an aerial shot of the cabins with a large lake in the distance. The video ends with Kevin still on the rooftop terrace of Architecture Hall.
