El 23 de agosto de 1991 se abrió por primera ver el acceso público a Internet. Se generó en el CERN para compartir información entre las computadoras de los científicos de este centro. Comenzó como un proyecto encabezado por el egresado de Oxford Tim Berners-Lee que no tuvo gran apoyo inicial pero finalmente demostró su utilidad. En 1993 habían 623 páginas webs y hoy por minuto se realizan 4.19 millones de búsquedas en Google y se envían 136 millones de mails a nivel mundial. El 43% de la población del planeta está conectado a Internet, mientras que en Uruguay estamos en posición privilegiada ya que el 63% de los uruguayos accedemos a la red de redes. En estos momentos de celebración de Internet también tenemos que analizar los posibles peligros que tiene y uno de ellos son las iniciativas para limitar la libertad de expresión. Debemos defenderla con ‘uñas y dientes’ para permitir la innovación, el desarrollo y una Democracia saludable.
