Commitment and Consistency with Matt Plumer

from Real with Rocky · host Rocky Garza

In this episode of The Rocky Garza Show, I sit down with my friend Matt Plumer—a financial and business coach who helps real estate professionals create real freedom, build wealth, and design lives they actually want to live. We didn’t just talk strategy—we got honest about what it takes to lead well when you're in the trenches of building something that matters.Matt is a guy who’s created a life that many people want: location freedom, profitable business, Friday golf, and a marriage that matters. But getting there—and staying there—has required some deep internal work, commitment, and daily consistency. And that’s what this episode is really about: what does it look like to stay the course even when things are messy?About Matt PlumerMatt Plumer is an Expert Financial and Business Coach, Acclaimed Speaker and Author Transforming Real Estate Success. Matt specializes in empowering real estate agents to create scalable wealth, unlocking true time and money freedom. With his strategic expertise, Matt helps agents build more profitable, sustainable businesses that don’t just generate income, but build the dream lifestyles they aspire to.By working with Matt, real estate professionals discover how to grow their profits, scale their businesses, and design a life full of opportunities, financial freedom, and lasting success.Owning Who You Are and Leading Without an AgendaMatt shared a powerful perspective: he sees his purpose as serving the people in front of him, without an agenda. It’s a simple but deeply grounded philosophy. And the more he leans into that calling, the more life he gets to live—on his terms. We talked about how that doesn’t come without friction. Even when life feels good on the surface—profitable business, great clients, weekly golf—there’s still that inner voice asking, “Are we really doing what we’re supposed to be doing?”High Activity, Low ProgressWe dove into something I see all the time in entrepreneurs: high activity with low progress. When you try to do it all yourself, it feels like you’re doing a lot—but you’re actually just moving slower. Or worse, running enthusiastically in the wrong direction.Matt talked about how he’s learning to get out of his own way by empowering others, delegating, and focusing on the right wall to lean his ladder against—before climbing it.Stabilize the Present to Structure the FutureMatt’s current season is about building something sustainable, not just scalable. After five years of laying the groundwork with hundreds of one-on-one coaching calls, he’s now able to say, “Here’s the singular target”—and build around it.We explored how focusing on one goal, one offer, and one audience allows you to serve better—and live more clearly. The Phone, the Gym, and the Wake-Up CallOne of the most powerful moments came when Matt shared how distractions—and specifically his phone—were stealing his attention from the people who matter most. He literally got a second phone just for workouts, with only two apps on it, to stay focused. Why? Because his wife Melinda called him out. She asked him the tough question: “What’s more important—your phone or me?” And that moment was a turning point. This wasn’t about tech or productivity hacks. This was about alignment. And it started with a painful realization that even good intentions don’t always align with our values—unless we’re willing to confront them.Leadership Starts at HomeWe talked about how the lessons we learn in marriage often translate directly to our businesses. If we violate someone else’s values—even unintentionally—we create tension. And the same applies to staff, clients, and community. When we know what people value, we can lead with clarity and authenticity.Matt’s story is a reminder that the cost of ignoring that alignment is too high—personally and professionally. What You Tolerate Is What You GetMatt’s journey reminded me again: your life, your leadership, and your legacy will always be shaped by what you tolerate. If you want something different, you have to raise your standard. That might mean setting boundaries with your calendar, your team, or your own bad habits. And that shift starts with one simple question: “Am I honoring what I say matters most?”Final ThoughtsMatt’s a coach, yes. But he’s also a husband, a builder, and someone who’s chosen consistency over chaos—even when that means slowing down to speed up.This conversation was a powerful reminder: commitment isn’t glamorous. Consistency isn’t sexy. But both will change your life.If this episode struck a chord, I’d love to invite you to my upcoming workshop: Lead Without Losing Yourself.
