Like anything we consider important, our relationship with Jesus will put us in situations where we must decide where our love for him and his Word ranks compared to our love for other people and things. Jesus is not content to be one of many important things in our life – he wants to be first. Following Jesus forces us to let go of things we naturally love and causes us to embrace things we naturally loathe. Jesus knows those choices will be hard, so he calls us to count the cost ahead of time. It not only involves calculating what we lose, but what we gain. No matter how much we lose as we follow Jesus, it pales in comparison to the eternity we gain.
