Flying is a dangerous business. Birds must dodge trees, powerlines, windows. Anyone who has seen a robin flit at full speed into a dense thicket knows birds have an extraordinary ability to avoid obstacles if they can see them.  But some obstacles seem particularly challenging.  This episode's study looks at a single 260 meter section of powerline into which hundreds of Sandhill Cranes crash annually.  Can knowledge from fundamental research help us come up with practical solutions? And how do researchers manage questions of ethics when testing solutions? Join us for a chat about "Near-ultraviolet light reduced Sandhill Crane collisions with a power line by 98%" (Dwyer et al, 2019). Sunda Cloud In the new Cold War battlefield of Indonesia, two old comrades conspire to topple the fledgling democracy. The weapons of this war are not nuclear missiles, but a far more deadly weapon. A woman, fascinated by the language of this land, yet caught in her dreams. We meet Eliza Collins in the fledgling colony of Sydney in the Spring of 1789. I am Bronwyn Eather, a writer, musician and linguist. I want to share this imagined journey with you through lyrical verse and music. In an age of new ideas, what does enlightenment look like here on the land of the Yura, on the other side of time?Cover graphic by Mark Fairhurst | https://www.facebook.com/mark.fairhurst.127 Prowling About Panama by George A. Miller (1868 - 1961) LibriVox In 1903, Panama became a brand new state in Central America by seceding from Colombia in order to facilitate the construction of the Panama Canal, which was finished in 1914. This fledgling nation was home to the oldest inhabited European settlement on the American continent, a rich indigenous culture, and a splendid natural beauty from coast to jungle. Such was the scene as found by George A. Miller as he was "Prowling about Panama" in 1919, an activity that is more a "getting lost in the right way" than systematic exploration. Follow the author on his prowls through an amazing country that at the time of writing was an exciting mixture of tradition and modernity. (Summary by Ava).
