It’s very easy to pass off bravado as courage because they both express confidence, but bravado makes itself known in excessive boasting. Furthermore, bravado often serves to psych oneself up to overpower fear. Godly courage, however, overpowers fear in the heart with truth, not filling the heart with fickle or fleeting emotions. He does this so that our confidence cannot be grounded in ourselves but must be grounded in who God is. This is what we see God accomplishing through Nehemiah as he encouraged them to fight. Think about this: What is the difference between humble confidence in God and confidence in ourselves? Why is confidence in God more helpful and satisfying than confidence in self?
